Essay on Psychopathology and Abnormal Psychology Essay One of the most controversial aspects of society throughout history can be seen in the way society views people with illnesses. Often times, people persecute their fellowmen just because they do not seem â€Å"normal† or they seem to â€Å"not belong† with the current society. These problems have led to the development of a branch of psychology which aimed to look at the causes and other related information that formed these mental illnesses. This branch of psychology came to be known as abnormal psychology. Abnormal psychology is that segment of the field which studies mental illnesses and abnormal behavior. The field covers problems such as depression, obsession, and even sexual deviation. The field also traced the symptoms, etiology, effects, and how these illnesses are maintained. Before we study abnormal psychology though, we must first look into what people see as abnormal. Historically, many of the earliest civilizations attribute mental disorders and illnesses as manifestations of evil spirits; some even have practices which remove parts of the skull using primitive tools as a means of releasing these evil spirits. As time progressed though, people such as priests, shamans, and witch doctors have been employed to supposedly rid these individuals of the â€Å"malicious† spirits which inhabit their bodies. During the times of the Greeks and the Romans, diagnosing and identifying mental illnesses have become more scientific. However, during this period, mystical and supernatural explanations still prevail over the ideas of modern science. One example is Homer, according to him, mental illnesses are caused by God, taking away the minds of the victims. It is not until Hippocrates wrote numerous accounts, journals, essays, papers and other scholarly work that made the study more scientific. In his papers, Hippocrates wrote about things such as psychosis, mania, phobias, and paranoia. His theory, however, still is flawed because he attributed the illnesses to four fluids in the human body: black and yellow bile, phlegm, and blood. During the middle ages, more horrifying and disturbing accounts were given, According to studies, during this period, people with mental illnesses were classified as witches, and they were â€Å"hunted† so as to rid them of the physical world. It was further justified by the writing of the Malleus Malifacarum (Withc’s Hammer) in 1486. In 1563, a person by the name of Jahann Weyer wrote a book called De Praestigiis Daemonum (The Deception of Demons). The book discredited the beliefs that demons were the culprits in mental illnesses and instead brought out the point that natural causes may indeed result in abnormal behavior. He also looked at the possibility of the use of drugs as sparks which caused these said disorders. With his work, the study of mental abnormalities became more humanitarian and started to look for treatment, rather than damnation, for its victims. In 1769, Benjamin Rush, a professors of chemistry and medicine at the college of Philadelphia became the father of American psychiatry. He instituted reform by putting into action several changes such as better ventilation, separation and classification of violent and non-violent patients, and created programs for recreation catering to the patients who suffer from mental illness. By 1880, Dorthea Dix, a schoolteacher from Boston started a campaign which led to the opening of 32 psychiatric hospitals which prioritized the poor and the needy. Several other prominent people paved the way for the contemporary notion of psychopathology. Emil Kraeplin was the one who introduced to society different classifications of mental disorders. This led the way to a closer relationship between medicine and psychiatry. The classification focused on two important groups – the praecox or what is no known as the schizophrenics, and the manic-depressive psychopaths. He believed that these illnesses were caused by chemical imbalance and irregularities in other aspects of the person such as one’s metabolism. Another important person which helped develop the field of study was Clifford Beers. Beers himself suffered a mental breakdown but was able to overcome it. Upon his recovery, he wrote a book which he titled A Mind That Found Itself. Beers and his book were responsible for the foundation of the National Committee for Mental Hygiene, a branch of government which worked to prevent illnesses as well as make sure that any treatment conducted is classified as humane. Today, abnormal psychology focuses on the 4 D’s, these are distress, dysfunction, deviance, and danger. One should note though, that these 4 d’s are seen as judgments, not objective behavior. First of all is dysfunction. Dysfunction is defined as a difficult or abnormal function. In psychology, one of the most popular diseases caused by a dysfunction of the brain is schizophrenia. This disorder is caused by enlarged ventricles, reduced blood flow to the frontal lobe, and an excess of dopamine. Schizophrenia is a chronic disorder that is characterized by people who talk to themselves, yell at someone else which seem imaginary, and other symptoms. Another aspect of the psychopathology is distress. Distress in psychology can lead to numerous diseases, most popular of which are anorexia and bulimia. Often times, people who develop these conditions see it as a way of coping with negative emotions or painful feelings. Traumatic events in a person’s life may also trigger disorders in eating. Danger results in one of the most overlooked psychological disorder in an individual. Often times, notions of fear will develop into anxiety. Anxiety, unlike normal fear, can be characterized by four inherent characteristics. First of all, it is defined by a specific target; secondly, anxiety is experienced in response to the target of fear; third, the target feared by the individual is avoided; and finally anxiety tends to be more chronic. One of the most interesting in the 4 d’s is deviance. We might see something as deviant behavior, but we do not know is that this deviant behavior for us is the deviant’s â€Å"normal† function. This is why this is the most blurred classification out of all of the things that we characterize as abnormal. From here, there are three important viewpoints which look at mental disorders and their causes. These three models are the biological, psychosocial, and the socio-cultural models. First of all, the biological model looks at the brain as the cause of the abnormal behavior. According to proponents of this model, mental disorders are caused by the different chemical imbalances in the brain, and as such, leads to the difference in a person’s behavior. The socio-cultural approach looks at the role that society plays with regards to human behavior. According to its proponents, society and culture play a major role in determining if an individual will be labeled as â€Å"mentally ill† or has a mental disorder. Often times, this is where social deviance is seen; this is due to the idea that one is deviant for a culture may be the norms of the other. Finally, the psychosocial approach looks at underlying influences which are often times unconscious. This approach looks at the childhood and past experiences of the victim. Proponents of this approach are Sigmund Freud and Josef Brener. The approach theorizes that the disorder occurs when the individual becomes â€Å"fixated† to the stage wherein the negative experience has occurred. Looking at these evolutions in the field of abnormal psychology, it becomes positive enough that the approach, which was more of spiritual during earlier times, transforms itself into a more rational field of study. Multiple Personalities: Do They Really Exist Multiple personalities- the existence of two or more distinct personalities or personality states within one person. In actuality, up to ten or even more personalities can coexist within one person, some documented cases have revealed over one hundred. But, the question remains, what exactly is the multiple personality disorder (MPD)? First I will look at what exactly the disorder is. It is, in simple terms, many complex personalities all inhabiting the same body. At any given time, one of those personalities is in control of the body. Each one has different tastes, style, thought process, and many other things that define a person. However, research has proven even more than that. In clinical studies it has been found that of the different personalities of one person, the eye prescription, allergies, athletic ability, and even diabetes can exist in one of the personalities and not the others. The person can switch at any given time from one personality to another, often not realizing it. This can account for memory loss and time loss in the primary personality, who often does not have access to the memories of the other personalities. A common misconception among the general public is the confusion of MPD with the disease of schizophrenia. Schizophrenics do NOT have distinct personalities, rather, they have hallucinations of voices outside their heads. Schizophrenia is caused by brain malfunctions and can be treated with drugs, whereas suffers of MPD cannot because MPD is an almost purely psychological disorder. MPD seems to be caused mainly by incredibly violent and terrible childhood abuse. In fact, about 98% of MPD sufferers were abused as children. The disorder also occurs between three to nine times more in women than men, the person being abused creates other personalities to handle the pain. In the case of a man named Milligan, his father beat him and sexually abused him. Then he forced the boy to dig his own grave, burying him alive with only a stove pipe to breath through. Then the father urinated into the pipe onto the boy's face. With that kind of abuse, you either go crazy, die, or develop other personalities. That is why, in many people with MPD, there are agitated and distracted child personalities. These personalities were created in order to suffer the pain of abuse. When the abuse was over, their call was no longer needed and the primary personality could resume control, dropping with that second personality all memory of the event and continuing as if nothing happened. This type of personality exists in almost all MPD sufferers. Another common personality is the

Jing Mei and her fathers first stop is in Guangzhou, China where her father can reunite with his long lost aunt. After visiting with her for a day they plan to take a plane to Shanghai, China where Jandale will meet her two half-sisters for the first time. The story was written in 1989 when China became a developed country. It has main scenes in China in 1980s and some scenes in China in the 1940s. In 1940s, China was a very poor country that was destroyed by war. First, in Jing Meis memory, China is a slow-motion film in which her mother came to her house to find her relatives in hopelessness after a bomb fell on her house. China was in ruin, all was in ruin and underneath her mothers feet were four stories of burnt bricks and wood, all the life of our house (P. 124). All Jing Mei can feel was the sufferings of her mother when she found each pieces of her house in turn. There was a bed used to sleep in, really just a mental frame twisted up at one corner, a book which every page had turned black, a teacup which was unbroken but filled with ashes, my doll, with her hands and legs broken, her hair burned off (P. 124). It looks like whenever Jing Mei thinks about China, her heart feels a stinging pain from her mothers pain and an unclear definition of family in her mind. Jing Mei just knows that China is where her grandparents, her uncles, and their wives and children lived and all killed in the war. Through her mothers telling about her doll that she gave to her youngest niece, If she was in her house with that doll, her parents were there, and so everybody was there, waiting together, because thats how our family was (P. 124), in Jing Meis head is just a vague imagination of a traditional Chinese family that all members in the family were always gathered together happily. Moreover, through her fathers telling, The roads were filled with people, everybody running and begging for rides from passing trucks. The trucks rushed by, afraid to stop (P. 30), everything in China was a chaotic pile when everybody just wanted to leave at any cost. On the other hand, in 1980s, when her father and she comes to China to find her twin sisters, China wears quite different clothes which are more beautiful and modern. It sometimes brings some familiar feelings to Jing Mei and her father but it sometimes gives her alien, surprising feelings. The first scenes, the familiar setting, come to Jing Meis eyes are a sectioned field of yellow, green, and brown, a narrow canal flanking the tracks, low rising hills, and three people in blue jackets riding an ox-driven cart (P. 21) when she is on the train with her father. Those scenes not only slowly awake her memory that she had almost forgotten (P. 121) but also make her father younger and excited like a young boy, so innocent and happy (P. 120-P-121). And when she first sets foot on Chinese soil, she feels so strange about the names of cities such as is Chongquing, and Guilin (P. 121) and about the landscape which has become gray, filled with low flat cement buildings, old factories, and then tracks and more tracks filled with trains like our passing by in the opposite direction (P. 23). No more trucks and wagons, there are just taxies, buses, and cars. No more immigrants in hurry to run away, there are just a stream of people rushing, shoving, pushing us along, until we find ourselves in one of a dozen lines waiting to go through customs (P. 123). Those are alien setting that makes her feel strange because her hometown is so different from what she remembered. This setting of modern China also makes her confused as if like she were in US now, I feel as if I were getting on the number 30 Stockton bus in San Francisco (P. 123). Then, Jing Mei gets more surprising things on the way to Garden Hotel. China seems to be a mix between the Orient and the Occident. China looks like a major American city, with high rises and construction going on everywhere, with scores of little shops, dark inside, lined with counters and shelves (P. 126). The modern characters of China are also expressed by Garden Hotel that has elevator, bellboys. Moreover, the rugs, drapes, bed-spreads, color television, refrigerator stocked with Heineken beer, Coke Classic, and Seven-Up (P. 127) also makes Jing Mei cannot believe in her eyes. And even hamburgers, French fries, and apple pie a la mode (P. 127) can be found there. But China still keeps its specific traditional characters with little children wearing pink and yellow, red and peach (P. 123) and these character occurs clearly when Aiyi, an old women in a yellow knit beret is holding up a pink plastic bag filled with trinkets (P. 124), comes to the air port with her crowded family. Through those alien and familiar settings, the story says that although the changes of the country from traditional to modern, from old to new value, the relationship among family members cannot be changed. And this issue of the story can be expressed clearly by the symbolic setting, China. It does not simply mean a country, it is the valuable bridge to connect the relationship between Jing Mei and her twin sisters. It is where the permanent family love begins. The air of the room being unhomely because some Japanese thought that Western-style was corrupt. Toshikos husband is accepting these changes, sitting there in his American-style suit, puffing at a cigarette (366). The city they live in is changing as well, dotted with bars and then by a theatre (368). The park that Toshiko visits had also changed, The paper lanterns that hung from wires between the trees had been put out; in their place electric light bulbsthat shone dully beneath the blossoms (369). The word dully being used to show that western-style is dull and dreary. Violence is one of the concepts Toshiko relates to western culture. Toshiko believes western style is violent, his frail body was wrapped in bloodstained newspapers (367), showing the degradation of moral values in this westernized society. When Toshikos husband is sitting there talking with his friends he jokes about the incident and stating I rescued our good rug (367), this showing that his mind is corrupt with the western culture because he did not care about the well being of the nurse and the blood did not faze him. The baby is a symbol of the violence in the western culture as well. The way the baby was born was out of wedlock, Even if that baby should grow up in ignorance of the secret of his birth, he can never become a respectable citizen (368). Toshiko worries that the baby who has been sinned against (368) may come in contact with her son one day and, savagely stab him with a knife (368). All because the baby was born out  of wedlock, due to Western modernization, Toshiko thinks of him as violent and evil. Western culture is not only se en as violent but as polluted as well. Western-style is also polluting their society. While walking in the park Toshiko notices that the people would automatically kick aside the empty bottles or crush the waste paper beneath their feet (369). Waste pollution not only being the kind of pollution polluting their society but moral pollution as well. Toshiko sees a homeless man and wonders was it one of those miserable drunks often to be seen sleeping in public places? (369). The homeless man in the park is a symbol of the baby that will grow up to be in crime and poverty, though what is most significant is the way that he is dressed, his khaki trousers had been slightly pulled up (370), this showing that he is westernized just like Toshikos husband. Toshiko is saddened by this westernized lifestyle. This story shows through many elements the degradation of moral values in the modern westernized changes that are taking place. Through the moral changes, the violence of the western culture, and the pollution we have seen that Toshiko believes that her society is corrupt. There are many symbols showing these changes; through the baby, Toshikos husband, and through the homeless. She continually contemplates the loss of their moral values and is saddened. This is material poverty because it shows that poor people, who have no luxuries, are still able to make the most of what they do have, and be thankful. The book is largely centred around the concept of poverty which was widely in evidence during this era. At about this time, a writer called Thomas Malthus wrote an essay entitled, â€Å"Essay on Population†. This argued that the population was too big and that there were too many people being born. This point is emphasised when Scrooge is talking to the charitable gentleman about making a donation for the poor and Scrooge’s reply is to let the people die in the workhouse to reduce the surplus population. At this time, the Poor Law amended the Act of 1834 which abolished outdoor relief and established workhouses for the poor, which resembled prisons. Conditions were extremely poor. The work was tedious and the food was insufficient. Men, women and children were divided and the system was feared by them all. Dickens also thought that this system was inhumane. He attacked this system in â€Å"Oliver Twist† and highlighted the attitudes which had created it in â€Å"A Christmas Carol†. This shows that the book was written at this time in history because it coincided with the Poor Law amendments which features in â€Å"A Christmas Carol†. The attitude of Charles Dickens to the poverty he describes is one of disgust and sympathy. This is partly because he has himself experienced poverty and understands the impact that it can have on oneself. He seeks reform and in his books he has tried to highlight the issues of poverty and to point out why change was essential. This is why Dickens uses a Christmas theme in his book, hopefully to bring out the better qualities of people.
